Conversation, 1998

The Old Man is as homophobic as most men of his generation. Out of the blue he asked me, “Can you still get records by the Village People?”
I just managed to keep a straight face. The Old Man must have recently attended one of his golf club’s dinners, with a discotheque afterwards.
“Uurh — I don’t think so, Dad.”

If the Old Man had had the slightest inkling that there was a gay subtext to the music of the Village People:

  • he would never have mentioned them to me or to anyone.
  • as soon as Village People music had started to play at the golf club discotheque, he would have walked off the dance-floor — and perhaps out of the building.
