Fireman scam?

The Old Man’s smoke alarms were installed some time ago, probably in 2008. Two or three firemen arrived one lunchtime to carry out the installation. [I was also there.] In the middle of the job, their phone rang and they had to dash off in response to some emergency. They returned about an hour later.
Afterwards, the Old Man said to me:
“They weren’t real firemen.”
“Of course they were, Dad.” I pointed out to him that they had had to answer an emergency call half-way through the installation. “And they arrived in a fire engine!”
Presumably the Old Man had not seen the fire engine parked outside his house, or he had forgotten that it had been there.
