Bert’s was closed, with a printed notice affixed to the rolled-down shutters — no doubt advising days closed for the Bank Holiday, and day of reopening. I went to Salty Sally’s instead.
The blonde girl and a swarthy young man were on duty. I ordered cod and chips, but the girl obviously misheard me — she presented me with peas and chips.
There were no standard-size cod ready, so she gave me two small ones.
When I ate the fish and chips, back at the Old Man’s house, I was not impressed. The chips were not very warm, and each of the two “fish” consisted of as much batter as fish.
