Conversation, 2002

The Deceased Lady went into residential care in 2002. Twilight Towers was the second care home she lived in, after a brief stay elsewhere. That autumn, I was at the Old Man’s house, and he was telling me about a recent visit to Twilight Towers. He said that the staff there had informed him that he would need to buy some toiletries for the Deceased Lady, and in particular he mentioned: “She hasn’t got any shower-gel.”
I could see that, although he was happy to buy the toiletries, he was a little perplexed. Inside his head, the gear-wheels were turning. Finally he asked me:
“What do you use gel for in a shower?”
