Wednesday 1 January 2014
Some local people may not have been up late last night: at 06:40 there is a light on in the upper storey of 4 Cypress Crescent. The Ports’ bathroom window is dimly lit; the JGs’ house is in darkness.
There is rain during the morning. Shortly after 10:15 Mrs JG hastens from her garden-gate to the Gemini, which has been parked overnight alongside the Old Man’s front side lawn. She drives off up Acacia Grove.
It is still raining at lunchtime, but it eases off not long after 13:30.
The weather is dry for a few hours during the afternoon, much of which I spend at cousin Naomi’s house.
Naomi is worried about a letter she posted on New Year’s Eve but (she has subsequently realised) probably after the last collection that day. Will it get wet in the pillar-box? It contains a postal order. (She doesn’t have a bank account.) I make a suggestion to her, about what she should do in future.
Soon after I return to the Old Man’s house, it starts raining again, and it continues for hours. The roadway becomes very wet.
