Not a gleam

Saturday 18 January 2014

In the morning, it is dull and wet. By 12:30 or so, the sky is lighter and the rain has eased off. Forty minutes later, the rain that is still falling is very fine.

In the afternoon, the weather turns dry. At 15:25, two boys and two girls, all wearing coloured anoraks with the hoods down, descend past the driveway of the Old Man’s house. Some or all of them are drinking from bottles of soft drink — most likely they are returning from the corner shop. They all head off in the direction of Cypress Crescent; the boys cross the road, diagonally, but the girls continue on the near pavement.
There is not a gleam of sunshine today.
